Message from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of Geology, at Zagazig University (GDZU). The field of Earth and Planetary Science offers a rich variety of research targets and educational opportunities for students. The department graduated the first class at 1979.
The undergraduates can choose from three concentrations that reflect the strengths of our program, Geology (special), Geology and chemistry and Geology& physics.
The department offer MSc. and Ph.D. degrees in hard rocks, stratigraphy and paleontology, Sedimentary rocks, Petroleum& hydrology and Geophysics.
Objectives of the Department
1. The Geology Department strives to serve the key objectives of the development of our country through its programs of study and research in both the pure and applied aspects of Geological Sciences.
2. It prepares young students to succeed foreign talents.
3. The Department aims to perform geoscientific tasks at par with the scientific advancement in the world.
Why study Geological Scinces
Geological science majors learn about the wide range of external and internal geological processes that shape the world we live in. They study topics such as rocks and minerals, ores, rivers, beaches, volcanoes, glaciers, earthquakes, plate tectonics, groundwater, global climate change, soils and sediments, to name just a few, using a wide variety of tools and techniques.
Geological science is an ideal choice for students who don't want to spend their careers sitting in a cubicle, but would rather be "out and about" performing a wide variety of interesting tasks. In addition, it is a discipline in which students have a good chance of earning a living by doing professionally what they were trained to do.
Field Trips
The Department arranges four field trips for the student from first yesr to the 4th year.
First year students go to El-Moakktam mountain and geological Museum.
2nd year students go to El-Moakktam mountain, Abu Rawash area and El-Wahat El-Bahryia
3rd year students go to South Sinai (Themed Road- Taba belt- W.Watir, Dahab, Neubia, Sharm El-Shikh south road)
4th year students go to Red sea (Hurghada (Esh El-Malaha, Safaga-Qena Road, and Muhamed Rabbah and Mahamid phosphate mines) and South Sinai
